MedDRA Coding Practice: Hands-On Exercises and Verbatims
Reading about MedDRA coding and actually doing it are different skills. MedDRA Learner is built around the second one — you get a verbatim, you search or browse the real dictionary, and you code it. Right or wrong, you find out immediately.
How to practice MedDRA coding
The practice loop is the same one a real coder uses: take a verbatim term (the patient or reporter's own words for what happened), search for it in the dictionary, and select the term that matches. MedDRA Learner runs this against the live MedDRA dictionary rather than a static list, so what you're practicing against is the same terminology set regulators and safety teams code against every day.
An AI tutor sits alongside the exercise and gives hints when you're stuck — pointing you toward the right part of the hierarchy or the right distinction to consider — without ever just handing you the answer. That matters because MedDRA coding practice that just shows you the correct term doesn't build judgment; it builds memorization of that one example.
MedDRA coding exercises: what you're actually training
Most MedDRA coding exercises worth doing come down to a small number of repeated skills:
- Finding the right terminology — searching effectively when the verbatim doesn't use MedDRA's exact wording (which is most of the time).
- Navigating the hierarchy — knowing how SOC, HLGT, HLT, PT, and LLT relate, and where ambiguous terms tend to sit.
- Selecting the LLT — MedDRA's coding convention is to always code to the LLT closest to the verbatim as reported. This is the single most repeated decision in real coding work, and the one most exercises should target.
- Reviewing your own coding decisions — checking whether the term you picked actually matches the reported event, not just whether it sounds close.
MedDRA coding examples, not just definitions
A definition of "Lowest Level Term" doesn't teach you to pick one under time pressure with an ambiguous verbatim in front of you. What builds that is working through examples — enough of them that the pattern-matching becomes automatic. That's the entire premise of this platform: practice is the product, not an occasional exercise bolted onto a course.
LLT-level practice without a MedDRA subscription
MedDRA's full hierarchy — PT, HLT, HLGT, SOC — is licensed content, only shown to accounts with an active MedDRA subscription. If you don't hold one personally, the individual/public tier here still lets you search and code real LLT-level verbatim terms with no subscription required — which happens to be the level where most real coding accuracy is won or lost. If your organization does hold a MedDRA subscription, an Enterprise account unlocks full SOC-to-LLT visibility for your team.
