MedDRA coding skills
MedDRA Coding Skills for Pharmacovigilance Careers
Whether you're applying for a case processor, safety associate, or clinical coding role, MedDRA coding skill is usually tested directly — not just asked about. Here's what that actually means, and how to get ready.
MedDRA skills for pharmacovigilance roles
Job descriptions for PV case processors, drug safety associates, and clinical coders almost always list "MedDRA coding experience" as a requirement, but what's actually being evaluated day to day is narrower: can you take a reported adverse event, in the reporter's own words, and consistently find the right LLT for it — quickly, and without getting it visibly wrong on obvious cases. That's the skill hiring managers are screening for, and it's the skill that's hardest to demonstrate from a resume alone.
MedDRA coding interview questions
Interviews for coding-adjacent roles commonly include some version of a practical test: you're given a handful of verbatim terms and asked to code them, or to talk through how you'd approach an ambiguous one. The questions tend to probe:
- Whether you understand why coding goes to the LLT closest to the verbatim, not to whichever PT sounds clinically tidiest.
- How you handle a verbatim that doesn't map cleanly to any single term — do you split it, or force it into one term that's close enough?
- Basic hierarchy literacy: can you explain what SOC, HLGT, HLT, PT, and LLT each represent, and how a coding decision at LLT determines the rest?
- Whether you know the difference between coding a diagnosis versus coding the individual reported symptoms that led to it.
The honest answer to most of these questions is easier to give once you've actually done the work a few hundred times, not just read about it.
MedDRA coding practice for jobs
If you're preparing for an interview or a role's first weeks, the highest-leverage thing you can do is put in structured reps against real-style verbatims before you're doing it under evaluation. MedDRA Learner's individual tier exists for exactly this: no MedDRA subscription required, LLT-level practice against the live dictionary, with an AI tutor giving hints rather than answers so the judgment actually sticks. A 10-day pass is enough to prep intensively for an interview or assessment; a 30-day pass gives enough runway to build the kind of fluency a hiring manager notices.
MedDRA coder training on the job
If you're already in a coding role and your organization holds its own MedDRA subscription, the Enterprise tier gives every associate their own login (instead of the whole team sharing one MedDRA credential — a real breach risk many teams still carry) and full SOC-to-LLT visibility for structured onboarding, refreshers, and certification prep, without ever touching your live coding queue.
